Smoke gets in your eyes

Written by Jerome Kern (music) and Otto Harbach (lyrics) for the musical "Roberta" in 1933
Recording by The Platters was a # 1 hit in 1959
Remade in 1973 by Blue Haze, it hit # 27

They, asked me how I knew,
My true love was true,
I of course replied, something here inside,
Can not be denied.

They, said some day you'll find,
All who love are blind,
When you heart's on fire, you must realize,
Smoke gets in your eyes.

So I chaffed them, and I gaily laughed,
To think they would doubt our love,
And yet today, my love has gone away,
I am without my love.

Now laughing friends deride,
Tears I cannot hide,
So I smile and say, when a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes,

Smoke gets in your eyes.

I won't dance

GINGER:

Think of what you're losing
By constantly refusing
To dance with me.
You'd be the idol of France with me.

And yet you stand there and shake your foolish head rheumatically
While I wait here so ecstatically.
You just look and say emphatically:

FRED:

Not this season. There's a reason.

I won't dance. Don't ask me.
I won't dance. Don't ask me.
I won't dance, Madame, with you.
My heart won't let my feet do things they should do.

You know what? You're lovely.

GINGER:

So what? I'm lovely...

FRED:

But oh, what you do to me.
I'm like an ocean wave that's bumped on the shore.
I feel so absolutely stumped on the floor.

GINGER:

Ah, but when you dance you're charming and you're gentle.
Especially when you do The Continental.

FRED:

But this feeling isn't purely mental.
For heaven rest us
I'm not asbestos.
And that's why...

I won't dance. Why should I?
I won't dance. How could I?
I won't dance, merci beaucoup.

I know that music leads the way to romance.
And if I hold you in my arms... I won't dance.

I'll be hard to handle

Now we'll say till something do us part
That old dad of mine ain't got a heart
Any girl who's out for pleasure
Thinks of marriage only at her leisure
As it is, they've got the horse behind the cart

When my pop said we must wed,
He kind of wowed me, still I'm read-y
But one thing must be clear
At this time

I'll be hard to handle
I promise you that
And if you complain
Here's one little Jane
Who'll leave you flat

I'll be hard to handle
What else can I be
I say with a shrug
I think you're a mug
To marry me

When you first threw me a gander
I was willing to philander
But I never thought I'd have to be a bride
Now you're gonna find tough sledding
I don't want no shotgun wedding
I was only along for the ride

I'll be hard to handle
I'm telling you plain
Just be a dear
and scram out of here
I'm gonna raise cain

I'll be hard to handle
My bridges are burned
This wedding's a gag
And you're in the bag
Where I'm concerned

I'll be hard to handle
When we've said, "I do"
See there's no hope
I just got a dope
When I took you

I'll be living my life in bed
But they always will be twin beds
And I warn you, you'll be living like a monk
Our affair is now a past one
So don't think you've pulled a fast one
Just remember, I think you're a punk!

I'll be hard to handle
I'm no ball and chain
I'll find some means
To call the Marines
I'm gonna raise cain

Gonna raise cain
I'm telling you plain
I'm gonna raise cain

Lyrics:
Iif you knew Susie, as we know Susie,
Oh, oh, oh what a gal .
She's not so choosy, no, not our Susie,
Oh, oh, Susie is a lot of balusie.
When Susie kisses, it never fails,
When Susie kisses, she takes the wind
Right out of your sails.
In conclusion, beware of Sus-ion,
Oh, oh, oh what a gal.
S - is for sincerity which she's got none of.
U - is for you know what I mean.
S - is for sincerity which she's got none of.
I - is for the Irish in her smile. her Irish smile.
E - is for her eagerness to please us,
That is how she wants her Navy-eee.
Put them all together, and they spell Su hu hu hu sie,
The sweetheart of all the boys at sea.
Oh that Susie, she's a two-sie,
She's not choosy, you won't losie,
Don't care who she, I mean you-sie,
you'll get woosy, after just one day with Susie.
When you take her home about ten,
Another guy is waiting there to take out Susie out again.
So when you choose she, beware of Susie
She's just much for you , and you and me, and the U.S.Navy
